DAY 4: THE BENEFITS OF GRATITUDE

The benefits of gratitude operate at both a conscious and subconscious level.

  • Improves physical and psychological health. It makes us happier. (As probably does most positive thinking). It reduces anxiety and depression symptoms. It is also strongly correlated with optimism. It can increase energy levels and it might even increase our lifespan by years.
  • Helps you sleep better. It helps you relax and calm down. (Unfortunately, my gratitude routine is in the morning so I guess that might mitigate this effect.)
  • Enhances kindness and reduces aggression. You are more likely to help others and offer emotional support).
  • Improves self-esteem, reduces social comparisons and feelings of envy. (Seems logical.)
  • Increases mental strength, reduces stress and fosters resilience.
  • Also has social advantages. It helps us make more friends, deepen existing relationships and improve our relationships.
  • Can help boost your career as well. (If you think it about it, it also seems legit.) People who are happy make better job performance and increases productivity (your mental resources are not tied up with your problems). It also helps you network.
  • Reduces materialism. (It is always good focusing less on things that don’t matter.)
  • Makes us less self-centered and more empathetic.
  • Increases goal achievement. (This is kind of surprising).
